Toronto Zoo Animals Cool Amid Power Outage Heat Wave

Despite a power outage during a severe heat wave, animals at the Toronto Zoo remained cool and comfortable thanks to backup generators and emergency cooling measures. The outage, which affected parts of Toronto on Canada Day, knocked out electricity to some zoo facilities, but staff quickly activated contingency plans.

Backup Systems Activated

Zoo officials confirmed that backup generators powered critical cooling systems, including misters and fans in indoor habitats. Keepers also provided frozen treats and increased water access for animals. “Our team was prepared for this scenario,” said a zoo spokesperson. “The animals are doing well.”

Heat Wave Continues

The heat wave gripping Ontario has led to several weather alerts, with temperatures exceeding 30°C and humidex values making it feel over 40°C. The Toronto Zoo, home to over 5,000 animals, has protocols for extreme heat, including shaded areas and cooled indoor spaces.

Five-month-old snow leopards Zoya and Minu were seen exploring their outdoor habitat, which includes shaded rocks and a misting system. Other animals, such as polar bears and penguins, have access to chilled water and air-conditioned enclosures.

Public Safety Reminder

The zoo remains open, but visitors are advised to stay hydrated and seek shade. The power outage did not affect the zoo’s main entrance or public areas. Crews are working to restore full power.
