Snow Leopard Kazi Dies at Saskatoon Zoo
The Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo has announced the death of Kazi, a 19-year-old snow leopard who had been a beloved resident of the zoo. The zoo shared the news on June 22, 2026, confirming that Kazi passed away after a period of declining health.
A Long Life in Captivity
Kazi was one of the oldest snow leopards in captivity in Canada. Snow leopards typically live 15 to 18 years in the wild, but can reach their early 20s under human care. The zoo had been monitoring Kazi closely in recent months as age-related issues emerged.
Zoo Statement
In a statement, zoo officials said, 'Kazi was a cherished member of our zoo family and brought joy to countless visitors. We are grateful for the excellent care he received throughout his life.' The cause of death was not immediately disclosed, but the zoo emphasized that Kazi received compassionate end-of-life care.
Conservation Significance
Snow leopards are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with an estimated 4,000 to 6,500 remaining in the wild. Zoos play a role in conservation through breeding programs and public education. Kazi's legacy includes raising awareness about his species' plight.
