A 25-year-old man has died following an encounter with a bear near a remote airstrip in northern Saskatchewan, authorities confirmed Wednesday. The victim has been identified as a contractor working at a uranium exploration site in the region.
Details of the Incident
The attack occurred on Tuesday afternoon when the man was near the airstrip, which serves the exploration camp. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, but the victim succumbed to his injuries before they arrived. The bear was later located and killed by conservation officers.
Ongoing Investigation
The Saskatchewan Coroners Service and the Ministry of Environment are jointly investigating the incident. Autopsy results are pending, and officials are working to determine the circumstances that led to the attack. Bear encounters in the area are rare, but authorities remind residents and workers to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols.
The uranium exploration site is operated by a private company, which has suspended operations temporarily pending the investigation. The company expressed condolences to the family and is cooperating with authorities.
