After nearly $180 million in upgrades, Vancouver's BC Place is almost ready to become a World Cup stadium. Yes, that's real grass growing inside BC Place. Here's where FIFA's turf comes from.
FIFA Turf Sourcing
The grass is being grown at a specialized turf farm in Aldergrove, British Columbia. The farm, operated by West Creek Farms, has been cultivating the hybrid Bermuda grass for months. The turf is specifically designed to withstand indoor conditions and heavy use during the World Cup matches.
According to stadium officials, the grass will be installed in sections, allowing for maintenance and replacement as needed. The turf system includes a sophisticated irrigation and lighting setup to keep the grass healthy indoors.
Stadium Upgrades
The $180 million renovation includes a new retractable roof, improved seating, and enhanced facilities. BC Place will host several World Cup matches in 2026, marking the first time the tournament will be held in Canada.
FIFA requires natural grass for all matches, making the turf installation a critical component. The grass is expected to arrive at the stadium in the coming weeks, with installation completed before the tournament.
