From Ottawa basement to Grateful Dead archivist: David Lemieux's journey
Ottawa Deadhead becomes Grateful Dead archivist for 27 years

David Lemieux, a 55-year-old Carleton University graduate from Ottawa, has been the Grateful Dead's archivist and legacy manager for 27 years, a role that began in his family's Manor Park basement. Despite expectations of a tie-dye-wearing hippie, Lemieux presents as a clean-cut, articulate expert who recently headlined a sold-out speaking event at the National Arts Centre as part of the Ottawa Jazz Festival.

From Deadhead to gatekeeper

Lemieux's journey started as a teenage fan in Ottawa. He now oversees the band's vast musical archive, curating releases and preserving their legacy. His first ticketed speaking engagement was moved from the NAC's Fourth Stage to the larger Azrieli Studio due to demand. At the event, he wore a tailored suit with subtle Dead references: lightning-bolt buttons and dancing-bear socks.

Guiding the conversation was sommelier Alex McMahon, 36, a recent Dead convert who pitched the idea. McMahon recalled diving into the Dead's music a decade ago, saying, "One day I was, like, I'm going to figure this band out, and the next day I was like, 'Man, that version of Althea from '91 is so underrated compared to the one from '90 that everybody talks about.' I accidentally realized that I was obsessed."

A life in Dead music

Lemieux's role includes managing the band's legacy after Jerry Garcia's death in 1995. He has worked with surviving members like Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann, who were honored at the Kennedy Center in 2024. Lemieux credits his Ottawa roots, including his brother Jason and Aunt Julia, for his musical development.

The Grateful Dead, known for improvisational rock and a devoted fan community, left a lasting impact. Lemieux's work ensures their music reaches new generations. He remains focused on the band's catalog, with no plans to slow down.
