Quebec's forest fire prevention agency (SOPFEU) has implemented an open fire ban across much of the province as wildfires continue to rage in the northern regions. According to SOPFEU, the blazes in northern Quebec are currently five times more numerous than the average year, prompting urgent fire prevention measures.
Fire Danger Remains Elevated
Fire danger ratings are still high across many parts of Quebec, with more dry weather expected in the coming days. The open fire ban applies to a wide area, including forests and rural zones, to reduce the risk of human-caused fires. SOPFEU officials emphasize that the situation is critical and urge residents to comply with the restrictions.
Northern Blazes Exceed Average
The agency reported that the number of active fires in the northern part of the province is five times the historical average for this time of year. This surge has stretched firefighting resources and prompted the ban to prevent additional outbreaks. SOPFEU is monitoring conditions closely and may extend the ban if dry weather persists.
“We are seeing an unprecedented number of fires in the north, and the open fire ban is a necessary step to protect communities and forests,” said a SOPFEU spokesperson. The agency also warned that lightning strikes could ignite new fires, adding to the challenge.
Impact on Communities and Travel
The fire ban affects outdoor activities such as camping, barbecues, and campfires. Residents in affected areas are advised to avoid any open flames and report suspicious smoke or flames to authorities. Meanwhile, highway travel in some regions may be impacted by smoke, and drivers are urged to exercise caution.
Quebec’s public safety ministry is coordinating with SOPFEU to ensure resources are available for fire suppression. The province has also deployed additional aircraft and ground crews to combat the northern blazes.
