Langley Rainbow Crosswalk Vandalized Day After Painting

Langley RCMP are investigating after a rainbow crosswalk was vandalized just one day after it was painted. The incident occurred in the Township of Langley, British Columbia, and has sparked outrage among community members and local officials.

Vandalism Details

The crosswalk, located at the intersection of 56th Avenue and 200th Street, was spray-painted with black markings in the early morning hours of July 3, 2026. Police were called to the scene at approximately 6:30 a.m. after a passerby reported the damage.

RCMP released images of two suspects captured on surveillance footage. The individuals are described as wearing dark clothing and hoodies. Investigators believe the vandalism was deliberate and targeted the LGBTQ+ symbol.

Community Reaction

Mayor Eric Woodward condemned the act, stating, “This is a hateful act that has no place in our community. The rainbow crosswalk is a symbol of inclusivity and acceptance, and we will not let this vandalism deter us from supporting our LGBTQ+ residents.”

Local LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have also spoken out. “We are deeply disappointed but not surprised,” said Sarah Thompson, spokesperson for Langley Pride. “Acts like these remind us that there is still work to be done to combat homophobia and transphobia.”

Investigation and Next Steps

Langley RCMP are treating the incident as a mischief investigation. They are asking anyone with information to come forward. The crosswalk has since been repainted, and additional security measures are being considered to protect it in the future.

“We take these incidents seriously and are committed to finding those responsible,” said Cpl. James Edwards of the Langley RCMP. “We urge the public to report any suspicious activity near the crosswalk.”

The vandalism comes amid Pride Month celebrations in the region, which include various events promoting LGBTQ+ rights and visibility.
