The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia is investigating the death of a woman who fell from the Granville Street Bridge following a nine-hour police response.
Police Response on Granville Street Bridge
Vancouver police were called to the bridge around 3 p.m. Tuesday after reports of a woman standing on the outside of the railing. Officers closed the road and attempted to communicate with the woman for several hours, according to an IIO news release.
Just after 12:30 a.m., the woman fell from the bridge. The IIO, the province's civilian police oversight agency, was notified on Wednesday and has launched an investigation.
Investigation Scope
The agency investigates all incidents involving officers that result in serious harm or death, regardless of whether there is any allegation of wrongdoing. It considers whether police action or inaction contributed to the serious harm or death. The Granville Street Bridge was shut down for several hours due to the incident.
