Glacial lake outburst triggers flooding northeast of Pemberton, evacuation order remains
Glacial lake outburst floods Pemberton area, evacuation order stays

The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District confirmed Tuesday that a glacial lake outburst is underway at the edge of Place Glacier, sending debris and floodwaters through Place Creek and other waterways. An evacuation order remains in place for about two dozen homes in the Gates Lake and Poole Creek areas northeast of Pemberton.

Evacuation and State of Local Emergency

Properties in the Sea to Sky community were ordered evacuated last Thursday as officials warned of potential flooding. A state of local emergency has been declared. The regional district advises residents and visitors to stay away from nearby waterways, including Place Creek, Poole Creek, and Gates Lake, until the outburst has ended and staff can assess conditions.

Outburst Details and Expected Peak

According to the regional district's advisory, hazardous debris floods are expected in Place Creek and downstream channels, with potential for elevated water levels, erosion, and unstable stream banks. Officials stated that flows are expected to be comparable to the 2024 outburst flood and greater than those recorded during last year's event. The floodwaters are expected to peak late on Canada Day.

Impact and Safety Measures

Residents and the public are urged to avoid the affected waterways. The regional district continues to monitor the situation. The outburst follows a pattern of increased glacial lake instability in the region, attributed to warming temperatures and glacial retreat.
