The first rainy system of the summer season is set to impact the Maritimes beginning Tuesday evening, according to meteorologist Kalin Mitchell. The system will bring widespread rain and the potential for thunderstorms across the region, with the most significant precipitation expected overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.
Timing and Rainfall Amounts
Rain is forecast to spread from west to east, starting in New Brunswick late Tuesday afternoon and reaching Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island by Tuesday evening. Total rainfall amounts are expected to range from 20 to 40 millimeters, with localized higher amounts possible under thunderstorms. The rain should taper off from west to east by Wednesday afternoon.
Potential Impacts
While the rain is welcome after a dry start to the season, heavy downpours could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas and ponding on roads. Thunderstorms may also bring gusty winds and frequent lightning. Residents are advised to monitor local forecasts and ensure drainage systems are clear.
According to Environment Canada, a low-pressure system moving up from the U.S. East Coast will drive the moisture northward. The system marks a shift from the generally dry and sunny weather experienced so far in June.
Looking Ahead
After the system passes, a brief period of drier weather is expected Thursday before another potential system arrives for the weekend. Long-range models suggest a more unsettled pattern may develop, with above-normal precipitation probabilities for late June.
