ECCC Confirms Tornado Near Denzil, Sask.; Investigation Ongoing

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has confirmed a tornado touched down near Denzil, Saskatchewan on Thursday evening, July 2, 2026. The agency says details are still under investigation and further assessments are being conducted to determine the strength and path of the tornado.

Eyewitness Accounts and Damage Reports

Dwight Gerling captured a photo of the tornado, showing a funnel cloud touching down in an open field near the small community, located about 160 kilometres west of Saskatoon. No injuries or major structural damage have been reported so far, but ECCC meteorologists are reviewing radar data and ground surveys to classify the event.

Denzil, with a population of roughly 150, lies in an area that experiences occasional severe thunderstorms during the summer months. This tornado is the third confirmed in Saskatchewan in 2026, following a pair of tornadoes near Yorkton on June 28 that were also confirmed by ECCC.

Severe Weather Watches and Warnings

The tornado occurred amid a broader pattern of severe weather across the Prairies. Earlier that day, Environment Canada had issued severe thunderstorm watches for parts of central Saskatchewan, warning of potential damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rain. Residents were advised to monitor alerts and take shelter if threatening weather approached.

Meanwhile, other parts of Canada faced extreme conditions: Toronto remained under a heat warning, and severe storms in Quebec and Ontario left 55,000 hydro clients without power. The contrast highlights the volatile weather patterns affecting the country in early July.

Investigation and Safety Reminders

ECCC’s Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) may also be involved in surveying the damage near Denzil to confirm the tornado’s rating on the Enhanced Fujita scale. The agency reminds residents that tornadoes can develop rapidly during severe thunderstorms, and to seek shelter in a basement or interior room on the lowest floor if a warning is issued.

No further details have been released at this time. ECCC encourages anyone with photos or videos of the tornado to submit them to help with the investigation.
