Cowboy Boots Offer More Than Style for Stampede Goers, Says Podiatrist
Cowboy Boots: Function Over Style for Stampede, Says Podiatrist

Dr. Karim Manji, a podiatric surgeon from the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine, emphasized that proper footwear is crucial for Calgary Stampede attendees, with cowboy boots offering more than just western style. Speaking at the grounds on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, Manji outlined key features for comfortable footwear: a good fit, supportive arch, stiff sole, and solid heel.

Footwear Essentials for Stampede

Manji advised against flimsy, flat sandals that lack support for those spending long hours on their feet. Cowboy boots, he noted, have a solid sole, a well-fitted front toe box that accommodates the forefoot, and a solid heel, making them suitable for walking through the busy midway. “I think cowboy boots can be very comfortable on the ground,” he said.

Heeled shoes can be comfortable depending on the environment, but they apply pressure on the front of the foot and relax the Achilles tendon. Manji warned that poor footwear choices can lead to short-term issues like blisters and friction, as well as longer-term problems such as tendonitis or arthritis flare-ups. “Short term, they could potentially develop things like blisters or areas of friction and pressure,” Manji said. “Sometimes with extended periods of walking with perhaps a worn-out shoe that’s not very supportive, it can develop some tendonitis or some flare-ups of arthritis. Those are some things to consider as to why it’s important to choose the right shoe for being out here on the grounds.”

Weather and Foot Care Tips

If rain occurs, Manji recommended changing wet socks and shoes to prevent blistering. For tired feet, simple rest is effective. “Just making sure that if there are areas of friction and pressure, perhaps pad the areas with some bandages to reduce that friction and perhaps consider changing the shoes to more of a comfortable shoe,” he said. He also advised against breaking in new shoes at the event, as it takes time for materials to stretch and reduce pressure points.

While observing attendees, Manji noted a mix of footwear choices, some questionable, but said people respond to their body's signals. “People will respond to their body and how it feels,” he added.

Finding the Right Pair of Boots

Alexis Perkins, junior team lead at Irvine Tack and Western Wear, offered additional advice: go down one size from your original shoe size. Boots come in two widths for men and women, and the key is a snug fit on top where the arch is, without pressure on the widest part of the foot. This ensures comfort and support throughout the day.
