The CN 2447 steam locomotive, a historic symbol of Transcona's railway heritage, celebrated its 100th anniversary over the weekend with community festivities. Built in 1926, the locomotive has been preserved as a key piece of local history.
Community Celebration
Hundreds of residents gathered at the Transcona Museum to mark the centennial. The event featured guided tours of the locomotive, historical exhibits, and speeches from local officials. “This locomotive represents the spirit of Transcona and its deep roots in the railway industry,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham.
Historical Significance
CN 2447 was originally used for freight and passenger service across the Canadian Prairies. It was retired in the 1960s and later restored by volunteers. The locomotive is one of the few remaining steam engines from that era in Manitoba.
Ongoing Preservation Efforts
The Transcona Museum plans to launch a fundraising campaign for continued maintenance. “We want to ensure this piece of history remains for future generations,” said museum director Sarah Johnson. The locomotive is a designated heritage site under the City of Winnipeg's conservation program.
