Four individuals were rescued from a marine emergency off the coast of British Columbia on June 28, 2026, according to the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Victoria. The incident, which occurred in the waters near Vancouver Island, prompted a swift response from Canadian Coast Guard vessels and a Royal Canadian Air Force Cormorant helicopter.
Details of the Rescue
The JRCC received a distress call at approximately 2:30 p.m. PDT reporting a vessel taking on water. The exact location was not disclosed, but officials confirmed the emergency was about 20 nautical miles west of Tofino. A coast guard lifeboat and a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter were dispatched. All four individuals were hoisted to safety by the helicopter crew and transported to a hospital in Port Alberni for evaluation. No serious injuries were reported.
Ongoing Investigation
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has been notified and is investigating the cause of the incident. The vessel, a 12-meter fishing boat, was later towed to Tofino by the coast guard. The names of the rescued individuals have not been released pending notification of next of kin.
“This successful rescue demonstrates the effectiveness of our coordinated response systems,” said JRCC spokesperson Lieutenant Commander Sarah Jenkins. “The quick actions of the coast guard and air force personnel ensured the safety of all four individuals.”
Context and Safety Reminders
Marine emergencies in British Columbia waters are not uncommon due to challenging weather and sea conditions. The Canadian Coast Guard advises all boaters to carry proper safety equipment, including life jackets and emergency beacons, and to check weather forecasts before departing. In 2025, the JRCC responded to over 1,200 marine incidents in the region.
