The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has issued swimming advisories for three local beaches due to elevated bacteria levels. The warnings, announced on July 2, 2026, advise against swimming at these locations until further notice.
Affected Beaches
The health unit identified the following beaches with high bacteria counts: Sandpoint Beach, West Belle River Beach, and Seacliff Park Beach. Routine water testing revealed levels exceeding provincial standards for E. coli and other bacteria.
According to the health unit, exposure to contaminated water can cause skin rashes, eye infections, and gastrointestinal illness. Swimmers are urged to avoid contact with the water at these sites.
Ongoing Monitoring
The health unit conducts regular water quality tests throughout the summer season. Advisories are lifted once bacteria levels return to safe limits. Residents can check the health unit's website for updated beach conditions.
“We want everyone to enjoy our local beaches safely,” said a health unit spokesperson. “These advisories are precautionary to protect public health.”
Regional Context
The warnings come as Southern Ontario experiences extreme heat, with humidex values in the 40s. Heat warnings persist across Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent. The health unit also reminds residents to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
