Heat Wave Grips Ontario, Quebec, Moves East to Maritimes

A dangerous heat wave is gripping much of Ontario and Quebec and is expected to track eastward into the Maritime provinces, according to Environment Canada. Heat warnings remain in effect across large swaths of both provinces, with temperatures feeling like 40 degrees Celsius or higher when humidity is factored in.

Heat Warnings and Thunderstorm Risks

In addition to the extreme heat, severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued for parts of northeastern Ontario, where hundreds of residents are without power. Montreal is under a severe thunderstorm watch with the risk of wind gusts, hail, and even a tornado. The storms come as the region already struggles with the heat.

Ottawa experienced 100 mm of rain on Canada Day, and the city remains under a heat warning. The Ottawa Paramedic Service's Public Information Officer Marc-Antoine Deschamps provided tips on how to stay safe in the heat, urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak hours, and check on vulnerable neighbours.

Impacts on Communities

The heat has contributed to several incidents. A seven-year-old went missing at a Hamilton conservation area, and a kayaker died in a separate incident. In Peterborough, an impaired boater was charged after a drowning. Prince Albert police are investigating the death of a two-month-old infant, though the connection to the heat is not confirmed.

In Thunder Bay, six young offenders were charged with two assaults. A motorcyclist was taken to hospital after a crash in Central Elgin. Windsor police charged a teen after hitting a stop sign and fleeing the scene. In London, Ont., fireworks bylaws are being enforced.

Maritime Provinces Brace for Heat

The heat wave is expected to move east, affecting New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Environment Canada warns that the combination of heat and humidity will pose a significant health risk, especially for seniors, children, and those with pre-existing conditions. Residents are advised to stay in air-conditioned spaces and drink plenty of water.

Canada Day Celebrations Amidst Weather Challenges

Despite the heat, Canada Day celebrations proceeded in many cities, including Calgary, where concerts and events drew crowds. In Regina, thousands attended a celebration in Wascana Park. However, Carney's trip to Alberta was cancelled as Ottawa thunderstorms grounded his plane. In his Canada Day address, Carney emphasized national unity.
