Dave Mason, a founding member of the influential British rock band Traffic, has died at the age of 79. The legendary guitarist passed away peacefully over the weekend at his home in Gardnerville, Nevada, as reported by Deadline.
A Peaceful Passing
A statement on Mason's official Instagram page confirmed his death, describing a serene scene. "On Sunday, April 19, after cooking an amazing dinner with his beloved wife Winifred, he sat down to take a nap with sweet Star (the maltese) at his feet," the statement read. It continued, "He passed away peacefully, in his favorite chair, surrounded by the beautiful Carson Valley that he loved so much. A storybook ending. On his own terms. Which is how he lived his life right up until the end."
The cause of death remains unknown at this time.
Traffic and Musical Legacy
Mason co-founded Traffic in 1967 with Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, and Chris Wood. He wrote the rock standard "Feelin' Alright?" for the band's album, though it was Joe Cocker's 1969 cover that propelled the song to classic status. Despite this contribution, Mason was fired from the group shortly after the album's release.
In his memoir, Mason recounted Winwood telling him, "I don't like the way you write. I don't like the way you sing. I don't like the way you play. And we don't want you in the band anymore."
Solo Success and Later Years
After leaving Traffic, Mason found success as a solo artist with hits like "Only You Know and I Know" and the soft-rock favorite "We Just Disagree." His career spanned decades, but health issues began to affect his activities in recent years.
In 2024, Mason cancelled his Traffic Jam Tour due to a serious heart condition, with doctors advising against all tour activity. He announced his retirement from touring in 2025, citing ongoing health challenges.
Surviving Family
Dave Mason is survived by his wife Winifred Wilson, his daughter Danielle, nephew John Leonard, niece Michelle Leonard, and brothers-in-law Sloan Wilson and Walton Wilson. The statement on his Instagram emphasized, "He leaves a lasting imprint on the soundtrack of our lives and the hearts he has lifted. His legacy will be cherished forever."
