Russell Wilson, a ten-time Pro Bowl quarterback, officially announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday via a social media video. He will transition to a role as an analyst on CBS Sports' Sunday NFL pregame show, 'The NFL Today.'
Wilson's NFL Career Highlights
Wilson played 14 seasons after being drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft from N.C. State. He led the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl championship in the 2013 season. Over his career, he threw for 46,966 yards, 353 touchdowns, and 114 interceptions. He is one of only seven quarterbacks to be selected to 10 Pro Bowls and joins Peyton Manning and Dan Marino as the only quarterbacks to throw at least 20 touchdown passes in each of their first three seasons.
Historic Achievements
Wilson is the only NFL player with at least 30 touchdown passes and fewer than 15 interceptions in four consecutive seasons. He also holds the record for most seasons with at least 30 touchdown passes and 500 rushing yards (three). He is the shortest starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl.
In his video, Wilson thanked former Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, saying, 'Thanks for taking a chance on a young, 5-11 Black kid from Richmond, Virginia, that was told he was too small to ever make it in the NFL.' He also thanked his teammates, friends, family, and his wife, Ciara.
Wilson replaces Matt Ryan, who left 'The NFL Today' to become president of football for the Atlanta Falcons. Wilson had considered returning for a 15th season, mulling an offer to back up Geno Smith with the New York Jets.
