Apple's $150 iPhone Pocket: Fashion Accessory or Overpriced Sock?
Apple's $150 iPhone Pocket Sparks Social Media Backlash

Apple has partnered with renowned designer Issey Miyake to launch an unconventional iPhone accessory that's generating both curiosity and criticism across social media platforms. The iPhone Pocket, described as a "plush holder" inspired by "a piece of cloth," represents Apple's latest venture into wearable technology accessories.

Design and Features

The limited-edition iPhone Pocket features what Apple calls a "singular 3D-knitted construction" with a ribbed, open structure that incorporates the pleated design elements synonymous with Miyake's aesthetic. Born from the concept of creating an additional pocket, the accessory fully encloses an iPhone while expanding to accommodate other everyday items the user might want to carry.

Available in two designs, the accessory offers both short and long strap options. The short strap retails for US$149.95 and comes in eight different colors, while the longer version costs $229.95 and is available in three color options. According to Apple, the Pocket stretches as users add more items, allowing the iPhone display to remain visible through the material's open structure.

Versatility and Philosophy

Apple emphasizes the accessory's versatility, suggesting it can be worn in multiple ways including crossbody, handheld, or attached to another bag as an additional component. Yoshiyuki Miyamae, design director of Miyake Design Studio, explained the thinking behind the product in a statement.

"The design of iPhone Pocket speaks to the bond between iPhone and its user, while keeping in mind that an Apple product is designed to be universal in aesthetic and versatile in use," Miyamae said. He added that the product "explores the concept of 'the joy of wearing iPhone in your own way.'"

Social Media Reaction

The announcement has sparked significant reaction on social media, with many users questioning the accessory's value proposition and practicality. One user directly challenged the need for such a product, asking "So my pocket ain't enough?" while another commented on the price, noting "$230 for some s*** I can make with my sock is insane."

Security concerns also emerged in the online discussion, with one user bluntly stating that using the accessory was "asking to get robbed" due to the visible nature of the enclosed iPhone. Others expressed intentions to wait for cheaper alternatives, with one person writing "Will wait for the $2 replica."

The iPhone Pocket represents Apple's second wearable accessory launch this year, following the September release of the Crossbody Strap made from recycled plastic. That earlier accessory was designed to pair with Apple's silicone case for hands-free carrying.

The new iPhone Pocket will be available at select Apple Store locations and through Apple's website in several markets including France, Greater China, Italy, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The product's limited availability and designer collaboration position it as a premium accessory within Apple's product ecosystem.
