A Winnipeg man has become an unlikely digital detective after discovering a piece of someone else's past frozen in time. Jordan Shusterich recently found an old VHS tape from 1997 containing what appears to be a family's cherished vacation memories from Florida.
The mystery began when Shusterich purchased a used VCR from a local thrift store. To his surprise, there was already a tape inside - and it contained nearly two hours of footage showing an unidentified family enjoying what looks like a Florida vacation.
"I don't know anyone in this video," Shusterich told CTV News Winnipeg. "It's clearly a family vacation, and you can see they're having a great time. There's footage of them at what looks like Disney World, swimming, and just enjoying each other's company."
The Digital Hunt for Answers
Rather than simply discarding the tape, Shusterich took to social media, posting clips from the vacation footage in hopes of identifying the family. His posts have since garnered significant attention, with thousands of shares across multiple platforms.
Key details visible in the footage include:
- A family of four - two parents and two children
 - Clear shots of the family at various Florida attractions
 - Date stamps confirming the footage is from 1997
 - Several close-up shots where faces are clearly visible

Why These Lost Memories Matter
For Shusterich, this isn't just about returning a physical object. "This isn't just a tape - it's someone's childhood memories, their family history," he explained. "I can see the joy in their faces, and I imagine these would be precious memories for whoever this family is."
The footage shows the children, who would now be adults in their late 20s or early 30s, experiencing the magic of vacation through young eyes. The parents would likely be in their 50s or 60s today.
The Power of Community in Reuniting Memories
The response to Shusterich's social media campaign has been overwhelming, with many Winnipeggers and Canadians beyond the city sharing the posts and offering suggestions. While the family hasn't been identified yet, the widespread sharing gives hope that someone will recognize themselves or their relatives.
This heartwarming story highlights how technology and community spirit can combine to solve mysteries from the analog age. What was once likely considered lost forever now has a real chance of being returned to its rightful owners.
As Shusterich waits for that crucial breakthrough, he remains optimistic: "Somewhere out there, this family exists. I'm just hoping we can connect these dots and get these memories back where they belong."
