Downtown Windsor Hosts First-Ever Powwow for Indigenous History Month
Downtown Windsor Hosts First-Ever Powwow

The first-ever powwow in downtown Windsor took place on Friday, June 26, 2026, at Charles Clark Square and the civic esplanade north of city hall, marking Indigenous History Month with a vibrant celebration of culture and community.

Event Highlights and Attendance

Organized by the Can-Am Indian Friendship Centre, the event attracted hundreds of spectators. It included competitive dancing, traditional drumming and singing, and more than 20 Indigenous artisans selling their crafts. The powwow was supported by the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association.

Brytnee Brough, executive director of the Can-Am Indian Friendship Centre, expressed her excitement: “It’s amazing. I’m so excited to see all of the dancers here, all of the vendors, and how many people have come as spectators.” She added, “One of the reasons we wanted to set up in downtown Windsor was for visibility, to really show people that we’re here, to come learn about us, come meet Indigenous folks. To see this many people gathering in this area is really great.”

Community and Allyship

Ward 3 Coun. Renaldo Agostino praised the event, saying, “As someone who lives and breathes energy, I can guarantee that this is going to happen again and again and again.” He noted that when approached months earlier, he knew little about local Indigenous culture or the Can-Am Indian Friendship Centre. “I was willing, and I said I would love to learn,” he said. “Now, here we are today, because of friendship, respect, and bringing people together. I’m so happy to be here, and I’m so happy to see all of this and to be an ally.”

The powwow provided an opportunity for downtown businesses and residents to engage with Indigenous traditions, fostering greater understanding and connection within the community.
