This summer is shaping up to be an exceptional season for classical music enthusiasts in Vancouver. With a diverse array of outdoor concerts, festivals, and special performances, there is something for every taste. Here is a curated guide to the must-see classical music events happening around the city.
Early Music Vancouver Festival
The largest summer initiative is Early Music Vancouver’s annual festival, running from July 31 to August 10. It opens with a performance of Monteverdi’s Orfeo and concludes with a Vivaldi program led by renowned baroque violinist Rachel Podger. Between these highlights, eight additional concerts offer a mix of intimate and esoteric works spanning the Renaissance to the early 19th century.
Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Summer Concerts
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents several popular events. Symphony at Sunset moves to David Lam Park on July 11 at 8 p.m., featuring a blend of John Williams hits and traditional repertoire. Symphony in the Park takes place on July 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Burnaby’s Shadbolt Centre. Music director Otto Tausk conducts the former, while Trevor Wilson leads the latter.
Additionally, the VSO hosts movie nights at the Orpheum Theatre: Jurassic Park (July 9-10), Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (July 16-17), and The Lion King (July 24-25), with matinee performances available.
Vancouver Opera Free Concert
On July 19, opera fans can enjoy a free concert at Deer Lake featuring selections from Rossini’s Barber of Seville, Puccini’s Tosca, and Verdi’s La Traviata. Pre-concert celebrations begin at 5:15 p.m., followed by the main performance at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of VO music director Jacques Lacombe.
Other Notable Events
The Cascade Peaks Chamber Festival runs June 19-21 at RockRidge Canyon Resort near Princeton. The Victoria Summer Music Festival, celebrating 30 years, takes place from July 24 to August 9 at the University of Victoria. Finally, on June 14, the Annex hosts gala concerts featuring B.C. winners of the Canadian Music Competition at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
