Zayn Malik Defends $900 Tooth Fairy Gift for Daughter

Recording artist Zayn Malik has sparked conversation after revealing a lavish tooth fairy gift for his young daughter. The 33-year-old former One Direction singer discussed the incident on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast, defending his choice to provide financial stability through this unique gesture.

Substantial Payment for First Tooth

During the podcast episode released on Wednesday, Malik disclosed that the tooth fairy gave his five-year-old daughter, Khai, more than $900 for losing her first tooth. He described this as a premium amount, justified by his success in the music industry and desire to offer his child a secure future.

"It's everything, even to the degree that, like, you know, I'm raising her in an environment that isn't the same as everybody's," Malik told host Alex Cooper, as reported by Fox News. "You know, her dad is a pop star, her mom is a model and certain things that she does in life might not always reflect what other people's understanding of reality is. So I think I gave her a bit too much money from the tooth fairy."

Criticism from Gigi Hadid

Malik's ex-girlfriend and Khai's mother, supermodel Gigi Hadid, expressed disapproval of the extravagant payment. Malik recounted the backlash, stating, "It's her first tooth. And her mom gave me s*** about it." He defended his position by emphasizing his hard work and right to spoil his daughter.

"And I was like, at the end of the day, like I worked my a** off, and I should be able to give my kid what I want to give her, you know?" Malik added. The amount in question was approximately 500 British pounds, equivalent to around C$926, highlighting the significant sum involved.

Personal Motivation Behind the Gesture

Cooper suggested that parenthood often involves trying to correct perceived shortcomings from one's own childhood. Malik agreed with this perspective, explaining his tendency to overcompensate.

"That like feeling of I didn't get to do this, so I want you to be able to feel this," he said. "And I overcompensate a little bit too much sometimes for that." This insight sheds light on his emotional drive to provide luxuries he may have missed out on during his upbringing.

Co-Parenting Commitment

Despite their relationship ending in 2021 after dating on and off since 2015, Malik and Hadid remain dedicated to co-parenting Khai, who was born in 2020. Their commitment to raising their daughter together underscores a focus on family amidst public scrutiny.

Malik concluded by reaffirming his stance, noting that while some may view his actions critically, he feels no need to justify them given his efforts and achievements. "I know people in general like obviously look at it a certain type of way, but look, at the end of the day I was lucky if I got anything from my teeth, you know? And I've worked really hard for everything I've earned, so I don't feel like I should have to answer for them things," he stated.
