Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and international pop sensation Katy Perry were guests of honour at a lunch in Tokyo this week, hosted by former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his wife, Yuko. The social gathering highlights the ongoing personal and diplomatic ties between the two nations.
A Diplomatic Lunch with a Celebrity Twist
The meeting took place in Tokyo, where Perry was concluding the Asian leg of her global Lifetimes tour. On Thursday, Fumio Kishida shared a photograph on his official Instagram account capturing the foursome smiling broadly in front of a decorated Christmas tree.
In his caption, Kishida referred to Trudeau's companion, writing, "Former Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau came to Japan with his partner Katy Perry and had lunch with us." He used the occasion to reflect on the strong bilateral relationship forged during their overlapping tenures as national leaders.
Reflecting on the Canada-Japan Partnership
Kishida's post emphasized the importance of the partnership, specifically mentioning the Canada-Japan Action Plan (also known as the Nikka Action Plan) formulated in 2022. This strategic initiative was designed to enhance cooperation between the two countries in critical areas including security, trade, energy, and humanitarian response in the Indo-Pacific region.
He also noted Trudeau's poignant visit to the Atomic Bomb Archives during the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, affirming that Canada remains "an extremely important partner to Japan in all areas of politics, security, economics, culture" and beyond.
Tour Stop Turns into a Diplomatic Visit
The lunch with the Kishidas was part of a series of high-profile appearances for the couple in Japan. Earlier in the week, Trudeau and Perry were spotted sightseeing in Tokyo's historic Asakusa district on Monday night.
They were also photographed leaving the Sumo Stable Annex after enjoying a live wrestling match over a meal of traditional Japanese cuisine. These outings preceded Perry's final two tour performances at the Saitama Super Arena.
Perry's massive 91-show Lifetimes tour is scheduled to conclude this Sunday in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The lunch in Tokyo served as a notable interlude blending celebrity culture with international diplomacy, underscoring Trudeau's continued engagement on the global stage following his tenure as prime minister.
