Justin Timberlake's DUI Arrest Video Reveals Sobriety Test Struggles
Newly released police body camera footage from 2024 shows pop star Justin Timberlake struggling to perform field sobriety tests after being pulled over in New York's Hamptons on suspicion of driving under the influence. The video, which spans approximately eight hours, captures Timberlake's interactions with Sag Harbor police officers following his arrest in June.
Initial Stop and Police Encounter
According to the footage, officers stopped Timberlake after he allegedly ran a stop sign in the village center of Sag Harbor, veered out of his lane, and exited his BMW smelling of alcohol. When asked why he was in town, Timberlake responded, "I'm on a world tour," and after some hesitation, identified himself as Justin Timberlake. The officers then proceeded to conduct field sobriety tests.
Struggles with Sobriety Assessments
During the tests, Timberlake was instructed to walk heel-to-toe in a straight line and stand on one leg. He appeared flustered by the instructions and commented, "these are like really hard tests." Expressing nervousness, he apologized to the officers and noted that his heart was racing. Timberlake told police he had consumed one martini and was following friends home in the affluent beach community, located about 100 miles east of New York City.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
After failing the tests, Timberlake was arrested and taken to the police station. In the back of the police car, he asked, "Why are you arresting me?" At the station, upon learning he would be held overnight, he remarked, "I'm going to be here all night? You guys are wild, man." He also requested that the light be kept on in his cell.
The release of the video came after a joint agreement between Sag Harbor Police and Timberlake's lawyers, who had initially sued to block its disclosure, arguing it would invade his privacy and harm his reputation. In a filing, they acknowledged the video did not constitute an unwarranted invasion of privacy under state law.
Plea Deal and Consequences
In September 2024, Timberlake pleaded guilty to impaired driving as part of a plea deal that reduced his initial misdemeanor charge to a noncriminal traffic violation. As part of the agreement, he was required to give a public safety announcement against drunken driving, pay a $500 fine, complete 25 hours of community service, and have his license suspended for 90 days.
Sag Harbor officials stated they were pleased to resolve the matter and comply with state public records laws, emphasizing their commitment to addressing public safety and privacy concerns in such releases.
