Let's start with the obvious: 'The Office' is, at this point in American pop cultural history, one of the most beloved TV sitcoms of all time. It might actually be the last TV sitcom to truly break through to the monoculture, and people still adore and watch it endlessly to this very day.
You could go as far as to say that 'The Office,' despite being off the air for more than 13 years, has actually outlived the career of Rainn Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute. Don't get me wrong, he's worked steadily since the show ended, but he's arguably gained more attention for praising Charlie Kirk and continuing to talk about 'The Office' than he has for anything he's done in front of a camera.
Speaking of: Wilson recently went on Fox News Digital to make the audacious claim that 'The Office' — a show that has since received a multi-season spinoff and, if you were to turn on a TV at this very moment, is probably airing on at least one cable channel — wouldn't survive in today's climate. Yes, really.
'I do feel like you couldn’t make The Office today,' Wilson said. 'I think that would be too hard to be as politically incorrect as the show was. ... And I do kind of miss that.'
Wilson cited the 'really inappropriate' humor of the show itself, as well as the lack of 'self-awareness' from characters like Dwight and Michael Scott, as supposed evidence that we'd be living in an Office-less world under the alleged tyranny of today's sociopolitical climate.
'We milked that for a lot of great, really inappropriate stuff,' Wilson added. 'But even with the fact that painting that character as just an idiot, I don’t think you could get away with it today.'
