Music Icon Phil Collins Details Ongoing Health Challenges and Recovery Journey

Legendary musician Phil Collins has revealed he is currently facing significant health issues that necessitate round-the-clock nursing care. The Genesis drummer and celebrated solo artist, who turns 75 on January 30, shared these personal details during a recent appearance on the BBC podcast "Eras."

Constant Medical Supervision Required

Collins explained his current medical situation with candor, stating, "I have a 24-hour live-in nurse to make sure I take my medication as I should do." The musician described how multiple health problems have converged simultaneously, creating what he called "a difficult, interesting, frustrating last few years."

Multiple Health Complications Converge

The "In The Air Tonight" singer detailed several interconnected health challenges:

  • Kidney complications that developed after contracting COVID-19 while hospitalized
  • Mobility issues resulting from five knee surgeries, leaving him with only one functional knee
  • Chronic pain and difficulty walking without assistance

Collins admitted that excessive drinking contributed to his kidney problems, though he emphasized he has now achieved two years of sobriety. "I enjoyed coming off tour," he reflected. "Coming off the road, I thought, right, I'm gonna do all those things that I couldn't do. I guess I had too much of it."

Recovery and Positive Outlook

Despite these challenges, Collins maintains a hopeful perspective on his recovery. "But it's all right now," he stated, putting a positive spin on his current condition. The musician spent months in hospital treatment and now navigates daily life with crutches or other walking aids.

Musical Future Uncertain

Although Collins officially retired from drumming in 2022, he revealed to MOJO magazine last year that he still contemplates returning to music creation. "I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens," he shared. "But I'm not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I've been sick. I mean very sick."
