Oscars Security Heightened Amid FBI Alert on Potential Iran Drone Threats
Organizers of the 98th Academy Awards are providing strong reassurances to attendees of this weekend's ceremony that security protocols have been significantly enhanced following an FBI alert to local law enforcement regarding possible drone strikes originating from Iran. The alert comes amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, raising concerns about potential retaliatory actions on the West Coast.
FBI Alert and Immediate Security Response
ABC News reported on Wednesday that the FBI had specifically alerted law enforcement agencies in California about a potential retaliatory drone strike threat from Iran. This alert coincided with the beginning of the Oscars' red-carpet rollout in Los Angeles, prompting immediate security adjustments.
According to Variety, host Conan O'Brien and numerous media members were placed under heightened security protocols shortly after news of the threat became public. The Los Angeles Police Department issued a detailed statement to HuffPost addressing these security concerns.
The Los Angeles Police Department continues to monitor global events and any potential related threats that could impact Los Angeles, the department stated. We want to reassure every Angeleno that we continue to coordinate with all of our Federal, State, and local partners for intelligence and information sharing during the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Oscars Production Team's Security Assurance
During a Wednesday press conference with the show's creative team, Oscars executive producer Raj Kapoor directly addressed safety questions from journalists. I feel like on this show, we have one of the best teams in the business in all aspects, and that comes down to our security team, Kapoor emphasized. So, of course, every year we monitor what's going on in the world. We have the support of the FBI and the LAPD, and it's a close collaboration.
Kapoor further explained the production team's comprehensive approach to security. This show has to run like clockwork, he continued. But we want everybody who is coming to this show, who is witnessing the show, who is even a fan of the show, when they're standing outside the barricades ... we want everybody to feel safe, protected, and welcome. It's our job as a producing team to make sure that that translates, and that really comes down to us with this very tight relationship, and we have a whole other team of support. It's something that we don't take lightly and we take a lot of responsibility for.
Ceremony Preparations Continue Amid Security Concerns
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has not yet responded to specific requests for comment regarding the security situation. However, preparations for the prestigious event continue unabated.
Variety reported that publicists and studio representatives are scheduled to participate in a comprehensive red-carpet walkthrough on Thursday, three days ahead of Sunday's main ceremony. The 98th Academy Awards are scheduled to be held at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
Security personnel from multiple agencies are working in close coordination to ensure that all attendees, from celebrities to fans gathering outside the venue, experience the event in a secure environment despite the elevated threat level.
