Conservative commentator Megyn Kelly unleashed a fierce critique of several Golden Globes winners this week, taking particular aim at actors who used the ceremony platform for subtle political commentary.
Kelly's Fury Over "Be Good" Pins and Jokes
On her SiriusXM radio show this Monday, Kelly reacted strongly to appearances by Mark Ruffalo and Wanda Sykes. Both celebrities wore "Be Good" pins during the Sunday ceremony. The pins honoured Renee Nicole Good, a woman who was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer named Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis last week.
After playing a clip of Ruffalo discussing his tribute, Kelly did not hold back. "God, he’s the worst. He’s just so bad," she said of the Avengers star.
Her criticism of comedian Wanda Sykes was even more scathing. Sykes joked on stage about being "a queer Black woman up here doing the job of two mediocre white guys." Kelly declared that Sykes "should never be allowed to present again."
"You’re pathetic, Wanda Sykes," Kelly stated, suggesting the comedian would be better served by acting like a "classy lady" instead of "somebody who’s constantly mentioning, essentially, the fact she has darker melanin and a vag."
Backlash Over Ricky Gervais Award and Podcast Win
Kelly also targeted Sykes for a moment she deemed "disrespectful." While accepting an award on behalf of winner Ricky Gervais, Sykes acknowledged the transgender community. This was seen as a pointed reference to criticism Gervais has faced for transphobic jokes in his past comedy specials.
"Remember when they were just funny? Why does anybody watch this shit?" Kelly asked her audience.
The commentator didn't stop there. She also took a sarcastic shot at Amy Poehler, who won the inaugural Best Podcast award for "Good Hang." The podcast has featured high-profile guests like Ariana Grande and Gwyneth Paltrow.
"Amy Poehler won. That’s no shock, they gave it to one of their own," Kelly said. She added mockingly, "It’s because she really has a really, really insightful podcast, which you really feel enriched after watching."
Kelly's Own Golden Globes History
This criticism comes with a notable backdrop. Kelly's own show, "The Megyn Kelly Show," was reportedly shortlisted for a Golden Globe nomination in the same podcast category as Poehler's "Good Hang."
However, Kelly has publicly claimed she withdrew herself from consideration. She stated she learned about the significant amount of Hollywood schmoozing required to secure a nomination.
"I’d rather put a bullet in my brain," she said about participating in such campaigning. "Fuck no! There’s zero chance I was doing any of that."
The incident highlights the ongoing cultural divide between certain media figures and Hollywood's awards circuit, where political and social statements continue to spark intense debate.
