Jason Biggs Navigates Awkward Parenting Moment with 'American Pie' Legacy
More than twenty-five years after American Pie cemented itself as a pop culture phenomenon, actor Jason Biggs is still grappling with its lasting impact. In a recent revelation, the 47-year-old star shared that he has finally faced a parenting milestone he long anticipated: explaining the film's infamous pie scene to his own child.
The Inevitable Conversation
According to an interview on SiriusXM's The Julia Cunningham Show, Biggs opened up about the awkward moment with his oldest son, Sid, whom he shares with wife Jenny Mollen. The child had been hearing references to the movie and began asking pointed questions about the pie, prompting Biggs to realize he could no longer avoid the topic.
"They kept hearing about American Pie and pie and (asking), 'Daddy, what do you do with the pie?'" Biggs recounted. He emphasized that this was not a rash decision, explaining that he and Mollen discussed it thoroughly beforehand. "I actually showed him the scene," Biggs admitted. "Jenny and I talked about this, and we were like, 'We want to get ahead of this.'"
Controlling the Narrative
Biggs described how the movie continues to surface in his daily life, sometimes in uncomfortable ways. He recalled an incident in New York where a passerby yelled, "Hey, it's the pie f—er," causing immediate parental panic. Thankfully, his children did not hear the remark, but it served as a wake-up call.
"It's my version of a sex talk, right?" Biggs explained. "How much do you want them to hear from friends and other people at school, and how much do you want to control the narrative, and it was literally happening with American Pie."
To approach the conversation, Biggs first asked Sid what he thought happened in the scene. The child guessed correctly but was too embarrassed to say it outright. Biggs then showed him the clip, resulting in laughter mixed with discomfort. "He was a little uncomfortable for sure," Biggs said, but noted that Sid complimented his acting afterward.
Social Media Backlash and Broader Context
Not everyone approved of Biggs' parenting choice. His confession sparked criticism on social media platform X, with some users arguing that 11 years old is "too young" for such content. Comments ranged from calling it "not appropriate" to more blunt reactions like "That's just gross" and "WTF."
This scenario is something Biggs has humorously predicted for years. In a 2017 interview with People magazine, he imagined a future where his kids' friends might tease them about seeing his on-screen antics.
Reflections on the Franchise and New Projects
As American Pie 2 approaches its 25th anniversary this year, Biggs reflected on the franchise's enduring appeal. He credited co-star Eugene Levy with teaching him to ground even the silliest premises in reality, a lesson that has influenced his career.
"No matter how heightened the circumstances are … the goal for me always was to try to keep it as restrained, as contained, as grounded in reality as possible," Biggs explained. He added that he would be open to reprising his role as Jim Levenstein in a potential American Pie 5.
Currently, Biggs is promoting his latest project, Untitled Home Invasion Romance, available on Apple TV+. The film explores themes of love and resilience, which Biggs sees as a continuation of the heartfelt elements that made American Pie resonate with audiences.
