Former world No. 1 tennis player Ana Ivanović has officially filed for divorce from her husband, German football legend Bastian Schweinsteiger, in the wake of reports alleging the footballer had an affair. The legal filing was submitted last month at the Munich District Court in Germany.
The End of a Sporting Power Couple
The split marks the conclusion of a high-profile marriage that began in July 2016. The couple, once considered a super-couple of the sports world, first met in 2014 during Schweinsteiger's tenure with Bayern Munich. Ivanović, the Serbian 2008 French Open champion, retired from professional tennis in December of the same year they married.
The pair share three sons: Luka, 7, Leon, 6, and two-year-old Teo. According to reports, Ivanović, who resides with the children in Palma de Mallorca, has requested child support as part of the divorce proceedings. German outlet Bild reported the initial separation was due to "irreconcilable differences," with the marriage reportedly in a "deep crisis" due to differing lifestyles, with Schweinsteiger's work as a commentator requiring frequent travel.
Alleged Affair Preceded Public Split
The divorce filing follows tabloid reports that surfaced a month before Ivanović confirmed the separation. German media, including Bild, reported that Schweinsteiger was seen "hugging and kissing" an alleged new girlfriend, whom he reportedly met through their children's school.
"They both looked happy and in love, they didn’t take their hands off each other as they lay on towels on the sand. They were hugging and kissing," a source told Bild. The alleged relationship is said to have begun in the summer of 2024.
A Fading Public Partnership
The couple's last known public appearance together was at the Laver Cup in Berlin in September 2024. Since then, Ivanović's social media presence has notably featured solo shots or photos with friends, with few recent images of the family together. Neither Ivanović nor Schweinsteiger has made a public statement regarding the divorce or the allegations.
The filing solidifies the end of a nearly decade-long relationship that captivated fans of both tennis and football, tracing back to their courtship during Schweinsteiger's 2014 World Cup victory and his subsequent move to Manchester United.
