'General Hospital' Star Anthony Geary Dies at 78

The world of daytime television is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic figures. Anthony Geary, the actor who brought the legendary character Luke Spencer to life on General Hospital for nearly five decades, has died. He was 78 years old.

A Shocking Loss for Family and Fans

According to a report from TV Insider, Geary passed away from complications following a scheduled surgery last week. The news came as a profound shock to those who knew him best.

"It was a shock for me and our families and our friends," Claudio Gama, Geary's husband of many years, told the outlet. "For more than 30 years, Tony has been my friend, my companion, my husband."

From a 13-Week Role to Soap Opera History

Anthony Geary's journey in Port Charles began in 1978 with what was intended to be a brief, 13-week stint. However, the explosive chemistry between his character, Luke, and Genie Francis's Laura Webber captivated audiences, making him a permanent fixture on the show.

The pairing reached a cultural zenith with the 1981 wedding of Luke and Laura, an event that drew a staggering 30 million viewers. To this day, it remains the highest-rated episode in the history of American soap operas.

Geary was candid about his character's dark beginnings, noting Luke started as a "complete bastard" and a "cheap little punk." The character's evolution from a rapist to a romantic hero was controversial yet undeniably compelling, defining a generation of storytelling.

An Unmatched Legacy and Awards

Geary's portrayal earned him a record-setting eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor, a testament to his skill and the character's enduring appeal. He last appeared as a regular on the series in 2015, with his character ultimately being killed off in a 2022 episode. Luke Spencer met his end in a cable car accident in Austria, as revealed to Laura by his widow, Tracy Quartermaine.

Following the news of his passing, tributes poured in from the show that he helped make famous. Frank Valentini, the executive producer of General Hospital, posted a statement on Instagram expressing the cast and crew's heartbreak.

"Tony was a brilliant actor and set the bar that we continue to strive for," Valentini wrote. "His legacy, and that of Luke Spencer’s, will live on through the generations."

ABC Entertainment also released a statement, honoring Geary's landmark contribution. "Anthony captivated audiences for decades... The 1981 Luke and Laura wedding was a landmark moment that drew tens of millions of viewers and became part of television history," the network said.

In a 2017 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Geary reflected on his career and the character that would define him. "It was once very difficult for me to realize that more than likely my obituary in the paper will read, 'Luke of Luke and Laura fame died today,'" he admitted. Yet, he also acknowledged the incredible journey, calling it an "exciting ride" that was "well worth it."

Anthony Geary's passing marks the end of an era for daytime drama, leaving behind a legacy of unforgettable television and a character forever etched in pop culture history.
