Director Adam Marcus Says Val Kilmer Would Be 'Cancelled' If Alive
Director: Val Kilmer Would Be 'Cancelled' If Alive

Val Kilmer's legacy has been called into question following remarks from director Adam Marcus, who worked with the late actor on the 2008 action-thriller Conspiracy. In a series of social media posts that have since been deleted, Marcus claimed that if Kilmer were still alive, he 'would have been cancelled in a blink.'

Marcus's Social Media Outburst

Taking to Threads, Marcus reflected on his time directing Kilmer, referring to him as 'the guy who played Iceman and Doc Holiday.' He shared a photo from the set of Conspiracy, captioning it: 'Here's me and the Putz working it out.' Marcus anticipated backlash for criticizing a deceased individual but doubled down, stating, 'And to any of you rolling your eyes because of the whole don't speak ill of the dead bulls***, f*** that.' He added, 'Worst human being I've ever known … and that is really saying something.'

Kilmer's Troubled Reputation

Marcus's comments are not isolated. Kilmer was often described as difficult to work with. Director Joel Schumacher, who helmed Batman Forever, called Kilmer 'childish and impossible' and a 'psychologically disturbed human being.' John Frankenheimer, director of The Island of Dr. Moreau, vowed never to work with Kilmer again. In a 2003 interview with Rolling Stone, Kilmer addressed these criticisms, saying, 'I've been careless about how I viewed my business. But I trust that the truth is the truth and a lie is a lie.' He also dismissed Schumacher's claims, noting, 'Schumacher's not a great director by any stretch, but he makes everyone happy, he makes money. But his version of me being unstable — he's very smart, he can't say anything about work, because then I can sue him for slander.'

Kilmer's Own Reflections

In the 2021 documentary Val, Kilmer addressed his on-set behavior: 'I have behaved poorly. I have behaved bravely. I have behaved bizarrely to some. I deny none of this and have no regrets because I have lost and found parts of myself that I never knew existed. And I am blessed.' Kilmer died on April 1, 2025, at age 65 after a battle with throat cancer.
