Diljit Dosanjh Discusses Komagata Maru History on The Tonight Show
Diljit Dosanjh Talks Komagata Maru on Fallon Show

Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh recently appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to discuss the emotional and historical significance of his sold-out performance at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. The singer and actor, who headlined this year's Coachella festival, opened his Aura tour at the stadium on April 23 to a crowd of 55,000 fans.

Historical Context of the Performance

During the interview, Dosanjh explained that the Vancouver show held special meaning because B.C. Place is located just a few kilometers from the waters where the Komagata Maru ship was stranded in 1914. The vessel carried 376 South Asian immigrants, mostly Sikhs, who were denied entry into Canada due to discriminatory continuous journey laws. They were forced to remain on the ship in squalid conditions for two months before being turned away.

“The stadium we did in Vancouver, like, 1914 when our people came first time in Canada, they didn’t allow us to come to Canada and that stadium is just two kilometers away from that part that the Guru Nanak Jahaz Komagata Maru incident was,” Dosanjh told Fallon.

A Milestone for the Punjabi Community

Dosanjh reflected on the significance of the moment: “So yeah, that’s a big thing for us now, 55,000 people in the one stadium there … You didn’t allow us to come, and now we are here, man. So that’s amazing.” The performance marked his second stadium show in Vancouver, following a sold-out concert in April 2024 that drew 54,000 attendees and set a record for the largest Punjabi music concert outside of India.

The singer also performed his single Morni on the show. Dosanjh is set to play two sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden on May 24 and 25.

Record-Breaking Success

Dosanjh's Dil-Luminati tour in 2024 became the highest-grossing Punjabi tour in North America, earning over $36 million. His latest album, Aura, has been streamed more than 100 million times.

The interview on The Tonight Show highlighted not only Dosanjh's musical achievements but also the cultural and historical journey of the Punjabi community in Canada.
