The Arts Club Theatre Company's production of Come From Away is striking a new chord with audiences, as director Ashlie Corcoran notes the musical's message of unity feels particularly relevant in today's climate of division. With many Canadians reflecting on their relationship with the United States, the show's themes of hospitality and community have taken on fresh significance.
A Canadian Story with Global Appeal
Inspired by true events, the Tony Award-nominated musical tells the story of Gander, Newfoundland, which welcomed 7,000 stranded passengers from 38 grounded flights on September 11, 2001. Written by Canadians Irene Sankoff and David Hein, the show has been celebrated for its warmth and humour. It was the longest-running production at Broadway's Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, earning seven Tony nominations and winning for Best Direction, as well as four Olivier Awards and five Outer Critics Circle Awards.
Intimate Staging and Local Talent
Corcoran emphasizes that the Arts Club production, running May 28 to July 26 at the Stanley BFL CANADA Stage, offers a distinct experience from previous Vancouver tours. The Stanley's smaller venue, with under 700 seats, creates an intimate atmosphere. 'Anytime you see a show there, it's going to be different from the Queen Elizabeth Theatre because you're so much closer to the stage and the actors,' Corcoran says.
The set design reflects the isolation of the characters, with a square jutting into the audience and seven tall doors at the back that spin and rotate. Actors make entrances and exits only through these doors, adding a unique challenge. The show features 12 actors and 12 chairs, with performers constantly creating new worlds and positions.
A Focus on Local Talent
Most of the cast and live music ensemble are from Vancouver or Edmonton, showcasing local talent. 'We're seeing a lot of local talent on stage, which is always really exciting,' Corcoran says. 'Sometimes people think 'local talent' means performers who don't have robust professional careers, but the artists we work with have been on Broadway and have performed all across Canada.'
