Cheryl Hines Counters Chelsea Handler's Allegations Over Property Sale
Cheryl Hines, known for her role in "Curb Your Enthusiasm," is facing accusations from comedian Chelsea Handler regarding the sale of a home. In an exclusive interview with People published on Thursday, Hines expressed skepticism about Handler's claims, suggesting the timing is questionable.
Hines Questions Handler's Motives and Timing
Hines pointed out that Handler purchased the Los Angeles property five years ago and is only now voicing complaints. "I'm questioning the timing," Hines stated. "She bought this house five years ago and she's just now complaining about it. I don't know that she's getting a lot of sympathy from people. She's buying a $6 million house." Hines dismissed Handler's use of the word "toxic" to describe the home, arguing it doesn't make sense given the circumstances.
To bolster her defense, Hines mentioned that she left a personal note for Handler upon her move-in. "I did write her a personal note when she moved in, just saying how much we love the house. And I hope that she has a beautiful life in this house. And if you need anything, call me. And I left my number," Hines explained. "So I don't know if we were trying to unload a toxic house on her. I wouldn't have left my number." She added that Handler's complaints "don't really hold water" because of this gesture.
Handler's Allegations and Podcast Revelations
The dispute originated earlier this month on Handler's podcast, "Dear Chelsea," when a listener called in to criticize Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Hines' husband and the Health and Human Services Secretary, for working out in blue jeans with a large security detail at a local gym. This prompted Handler to share her own grievances about the home she bought from Kennedy and Hines.
Handler claimed the house was so problematic that she hasn't lived in it for five years. "That's how fucked up this house was," Handler said. "The idea that this guy is in charge of the health of our country when he didn't even have a proper foundation at his house?" She alleged that after the purchase, she was told the environment was toxic and uninhabitable for at least two years.
Further issues arose when Handler discovered an illegal outdoor storage unit on the property. "So now we have to remove his illegal bullshit from my property, and I'm like, how did they not find this upon the first inspection?" she questioned. Handler also mocked Hines' note, recalling her reaction: "I'm like, 'Yeah, how about a fucking foundation?'"
Hines' Response and Handler's Recent Move-In
Hines suggested that Handler is "just trying to get attention" and that it's "probably fun for her to make fun of" Kennedy. Despite the controversy, Handler later told Jimmy Kimmel that she "didn't know" she was buying the house from Kennedy and Hines due to a blind trust, and many issues weren't caught during inspection. However, she confirmed she has recently moved into the property.
This public spat highlights ongoing tensions between the celebrities, with Hines defending her integrity and Handler alleging negligence in the property sale.
