Caleb McLaughlin Confronts Racism and Unequal Treatment from 'Stranger Things' Fans

Caleb McLaughlin, known for his role as Lucas Sinclair in the hit Netflix series "Stranger Things," has publicly discussed the distressing experiences of racism and lack of support he faced from some viewers of the show. In a heartfelt revelation during a 2022 appearance at Heroes Comic Con in Belgium, McLaughlin shared how he was singled out due to his race, affecting him deeply both personally and professionally.

Early Struggles and Racial Bias

McLaughlin was just 14 years old when he debuted in Season 1 of "Stranger Things," starring alongside fellow main cast members Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo, Finn Wolfhard, and Millie Bobby Brown. Despite his integral role throughout the series, he did not receive the same level of love and support from some fans as his co-stars did. At the comic con, he recounted specific incidents, such as fans avoiding his autograph line because he was Black, with some even citing his character's interactions with Millie Bobby Brown's Eleven as an excuse.

"My very first Comic-Con, some people didn't stand in my line because I was Black," McLaughlin stated. "Some people told me: 'Oh, I didn't want to be in line because you were mean to Eleven,' even now some people don't follow me or don't support me because I'm Black." He emphasized that this racism was palpable, especially overseas, where he felt the bigotry acutely, making it difficult to discuss and for others to understand.

Impact on Social Media and Self-Worth

The racial bias extended to social media, where McLaughlin's following lagged significantly behind his peers. At the time of his 2022 comments, he had 15.4 million Instagram followers, while Matarazzo had 18.7 million, Wolfhard had 26.3 million, Schnapp had 27.6 million, and Brown led with 58.5 million. Four years later, McLaughlin's following has only increased by about 100,000, whereas some cast members, like Brown, have seen massive growth, with her followers now exceeding 72 million.

McLaughlin reflected on how this disparity affected him during his younger years, questioning why he was the least favorite with the fewest followers despite being on the same show from Season 1. "When I was younger, it definitely affected me a lot," he said. "You're like: 'Why am I the least favorite? The least amount of followers? I'm on the same show as everybody from Season 1.'" His parents had to explain the harsh reality, telling him it was because he was the Black child on the show, which he found shocking and painful.

Turning Negativity into Positivity

In response to these challenges, McLaughlin has committed to using his platform to spread positivity and love, refusing to reciprocate hate. "That's why, with my platform, I'm going to spread positivity and love because I'm not giving hate back to people who are giving hate to me," he declared. Over the years, he has stayed true to this promise, focusing on uplifting messages and actions.

Recent Fan Support and Viral Moments

Thankfully, McLaughlin's perseverance has paid off, as evidenced by a recent fan convention in Paris where he was showered with love from "Stranger Things" enthusiasts. He was joined by several cast members at the event, where fans could meet the actors. Footage of long queues of fans waiting to meet McLaughlin went viral on X, sparking widespread support and reminders of his past struggles.

One popular X post reacted to a video of the crowds, saying, "When Caleb said a few years ago that no one would stand in his line because of his character/being black. Look at him now! So many people lining up to see him & support him. You will always be loved, Caleb. ALWAYS. You truly deserve it all." Meanwhile, fans on TikTok praised his respectful demeanor and wished him the best for his future career, highlighting a positive shift in public perception.

This outpouring of support serves as a testament to McLaughlin's resilience and the growing awareness of the issues he faced, offering hope for a more inclusive and supportive entertainment industry.
