Legendary singer Barry Manilow shared a significant health update with his fans this week, revealing he has been diagnosed with lung cancer. The 82-year-old music icon delivered the news in a social media post on Monday, maintaining his characteristic optimism despite the serious diagnosis.
A Lifesaving Scan After Illness
The discovery of the cancer came after a routine check-up following a different health issue. Manilow explained that after recovering from a six-week bout of bronchitis, his doctor ordered an MRI as a precautionary measure. That decision proved to be crucial.
The MRI scan revealed a cancerous spot on his left lung that requires surgical removal. Manilow credited his doctor and sheer luck for the early detection, which dramatically improves his prognosis. "It's pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early," the singer wrote. "That's the good news."
Concert Cancellations and a Positive Prognosis
The immediate consequence of the diagnosis is the postponement of Manilow's professional commitments. He has been forced to cancel a slate of January concerts to undergo surgery and begin his recovery process.
Despite the disruption, the outlook is hopeful. Manilow shared that his doctors believe the cancer has not spread, a diagnosis currently being confirmed with additional tests. His treatment plan is notably less aggressive because of the early discovery. "No chemo. No radiation," Manilow stated, outlining a recovery involving "Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns."
A Valentine's Day Promise to Fans
Addressing his loyal followers, known as Fan-ilows, Manilow apologized for the rescheduled shows but promised a vibrant return. He is targeting a comeback during the Valentine's Day weekend at his long-running residency venue, the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino, which he calls his "home away from home."
True to his upbeat persona, Manilow ended his announcement on a positive note, suggesting his return will be a celebration. "Something tells me that February weekend is going to be one big party," he wrote, assuring fans he plans to return in tip-top shape.
