Former Toronto Sun Reporter Ian Harvey Publishes Crime Noir Novel Set in Scarborough
Ex-Toronto Sun Reporter Writes Scarborough Crime Noir Novel

Former Toronto Sun reporter Ian Harvey has channeled his decades of journalism experience into a new creative venture, publishing his first novel titled Prisoners of Circumstance. This crime noir book is set in South Scarborough and draws inspiration from Harvey's extensive career covering crime, politics, and other beats from 1979 to 2001.

From Newsroom to Novelist

Harvey, now 69, explained that the idea for the novel emerged during the pandemic when his freelance writing business slowed down. "I thought, 'Well, what am I going to do with my life?'" he said in a recent interview from Puerto Morelos, Mexico. "I write, so that's what I do. I just started sketching this idea out and writing it." The 224-page book took about a year and a half to complete and is self-published.

Inspired by Real-Life Experiences

While Harvey emphasized that the novel is not autobiographical, it is heavily influenced by the many stories and characters he encountered as a journalist. "I covered crime for a long, long period," he noted. "I can drive around places and go, 'Oh, yeah, there was a good murder in that one.' In my own neighbourhood, I can point out there were a couple of murders over the 45 years I've lived there." These elements, along with local events and personalities, were woven into the narrative to create an authentic setting.

Plot and Themes

Prisoners of Circumstance is set in 2019 and follows a reformed alcoholic journalist who returns to his old neighbourhood in South Scarborough to investigate the murder of a beloved variety storekeeper. The story also involves a double-dealing crime hustler who pits Greek gangsters against Albanian drug dealers. Harvey described the central theme as one of redemption, stating, "He doesn't necessarily find justice but he does find love and redemption, which frees him. All of the characters in the book are prisoners of their own circumstance, as many of us are."

Future Writing Plans

Harvey, a fan of crime novelists like Elmore Leonard and Raymond Chandler, has already brainstormed ideas for two more books. One is a science-fiction story that includes characters from his debut novel, and the other focuses on tracking a serial killer whose victims are on cruise ships. He hopes to continue exploring diverse genres while leveraging his journalistic background for storytelling.

This novel marks a significant shift from Harvey's previous works, which include co-authoring a non-fiction book on Terry Fox and ghost-writing about the founding of Labourers Local 183 in Toronto. With Prisoners of Circumstance, he aims to offer readers a gripping, locally-inspired tale that reflects the complexities of human nature and community life.
