Calgary's iconic Caffe Beano on 17 Avenue has released its third poetry anthology, bringing together more than 50 local artists in a celebration of the city's creative community. The volume, produced over the past 18 years, features poems and illustrations from a diverse group of Calgary writers and visual artists.
A Tradition of Artistic Collaboration
The anthology was spearheaded by Caffe Beano manager Emily Pohorelic, along with Meghan Mendes, Charlie Roe, and Eugene Stickland. The team worked to compile works from over 50 contributors, making it the largest collection yet for the coffee house's literary series.
“This anthology is a testament to the vibrant arts scene in Calgary and the role that community spaces like Caffe Beano play in nurturing it,” said Pohorelic in a statement. The project reflects the café's long-standing commitment to supporting local talent, dating back to its first volume published 18 years ago.
Community Impact and Reach
The anthology includes poetry and illustrations from established and emerging artists, offering a snapshot of Calgary's contemporary creative landscape. The book is available at Caffe Beano and select local bookstores, with proceeds supporting future arts initiatives at the café.
Eugene Stickland, a contributor and co-organizer, emphasized the collaborative spirit of the project. “This is about more than a book—it's about bringing people together and giving a platform to voices that might otherwise go unheard,” he said. The anthology has already garnered attention from local arts organizations and readers, reinforcing Caffe Beano's reputation as a hub for cultural exchange in the city.
