Grammys Add 5 New Categories, Change Best New Artist

The Recording Academy has announced the addition of five new categories for the Grammy Awards, along with significant changes to the Best New Artist eligibility criteria. The updates aim to recognize a broader range of musical genres and emerging talent.

New Categories for 2027

The five new categories include Best African Music Performance, Best Alternative Jazz Album, Best Americana Performance, Best Spoken Word Poetry Album, and Best Video Game Soundtrack. These additions reflect the evolving landscape of the music industry and the academy's commitment to inclusivity.

Best New Artist Changes

In a major shift, the Best New Artist category will now allow artists who have released up to three albums or 30 tracks to qualify, expanding the pool of eligible nominees. Previously, artists with more than one album were often excluded. This change aims to recognize artists who may have built a substantial catalog without achieving mainstream breakthrough status.

Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. stated, "These updates ensure the Grammys remain relevant and reflective of today's music. We're excited to honor a wider array of artists and genres."

The changes come after years of criticism that the awards overlooked certain genres and emerging artists. The new categories and eligibility rules will take effect for the 2027 Grammy Awards.
