Designs Unveiled for Windsor's Emancipation Celebration Monument

The City of Windsor, Ontario, unveiled the official designs for the Emancipation Celebration Monument on April 24, 2026. The monument, which will commemorate the historical significance of emancipation and the ongoing struggle for freedom and equality, was presented to the public during a ceremony attended by local officials, community leaders, and residents.

The design concept, created by a team of artists and architects, features a central sculpture symbolizing liberation and unity, surrounded by interpretive panels that tell the story of emancipation in the region. The monument is intended to serve as a permanent reminder of the contributions and resilience of African Canadian communities in Windsor and across Canada.

Mayor Drew Dilkens expressed pride in the project, stating that the monument will be a landmark for education and reflection. The project has received support from various community groups and is expected to be completed within the next year.
