As the weather finally improves, spring brings renewal and new life across Alberta. This Mother's Day weekend, we revisit nature photographer Mike Drew's heartwarming snapshots of animal mothers and their young in the wild.
A Gallery of Maternal Moments
From a fox and her kits in Nanton to a mule deer and fawn at Travers Reservoir, Drew's lens captures the tender bonds between mothers and their offspring. A mother kingbird feeds her baby a raspberry north of Water Valley, while a long-tailed weasel carefully moves her young near Nightingale.
Birds and Beyond
An eared grebe tends to its chick on a slough near Ensign, and a mother goose leads her goslings in the Sibbald Creek valley. A mule deer finds her fawn in a canola field near Milo, and a mountain bluebird gathers nesting material in the Porcupine Hills.
Moose, Antelope, and More
A feral mother and baby explore the James River valley, while a moose and calf cross a field south of Indus. A newborn antelope, only minutes old, stands on the prairie near Tilley alongside its twin. A whitetail deer searches for her fawn south of Arrowwood, and a cow and calf rest east of Longview during calving season.
Other highlights include a moose and her baby breakfasting in the Bow River near Carseland, and a whitetail pair pausing before sunrise near Stobart. Drew's extensive archive promises many more treasures to share.
