University of Calgary Students' Union Advocates for Mac Hall Expansion to Accommodate Growing Campus Population

The University of Calgary's Students' Union is championing a significant expansion of the MacEwan Student Centre, commonly known as Mac Hall, citing unprecedented growth in undergraduate enrollment that has stretched campus facilities to their limits. With student numbers approaching 40,000, union leadership argues that the time for action is now to ensure adequate space and services for the university community.

Enrollment Surge Creates Urgent Need for More Space

According to Students' Union President Naomie Bakana, undergraduate enrollment has nearly doubled since the facility's last expansion in 2002, when approximately 20,000 students utilized the campus hub. "Now, we have almost double that," Bakana emphasized. "It's getting cramped in here and there's a lot of space that's taken up." The situation is expected to intensify further as the university's strategic plan aims to add an additional 10,000 students by 2030.

Mac Hall serves as the central gathering point for campus life, housing essential amenities including:

  • The Den and Black Lounge social spaces
  • Various student services and administrative offices
  • The MacEwan concert hall and conference facilities

"A lot of students come here to eat, to study or just to hang out with friends," Bakana noted. "It's really the hub of all essential student services on campus."

Historical Precedent and Funding Considerations

The student centre, which first opened in 1967, has undergone several expansions throughout its history, including significant projects in the 1980s and early 2000s. Each previous expansion was partially funded through student levies, establishing a precedent for student financial participation in campus infrastructure development.

Bakana explained that the Students' Union has been actively gauging student sentiment about a potential expansion. "The question is, would they be able to help support that expansion?" she asked, referencing survey results that indicated general support for more campus space and services despite varied opinions on implementation details.

Referendum Planned for March Student Elections

To move forward with expansion plans, the Students' Union has crafted a referendum question that will appear on election ballots this March. Undergraduate students will be asked whether they support paying an additional supplemental fee beginning in the fall 2026 semester to help fund the Mac Hall expansion project.

According to the Students' Union website, the proposed fee structure would enable the organization to secure financing that could expedite the construction timeline. This approach mirrors historical funding models while addressing current space constraints more rapidly than traditional university budgeting might allow.

"If the university is going to increase enrolment, we have to think about how we're going to be able to support that change," Bakana stated, highlighting the proactive stance the Students' Union is taking toward campus planning. The referendum represents a critical step in determining whether students are willing to invest directly in their campus experience as the University of Calgary continues to grow.
