Formica Corporation has announced the winners of its ninth annual FORM Student Innovation Competition, which drew a record-breaking 303 eligible submissions from students across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The competition challenges interior design, architecture, and furniture design students to create innovative furniture pieces using Formica brand products.
Winning Design and Theme
The 2026 competition theme was 'Mood-Boosting Design,' prompting students to explore how bold colors, unexpected color combinations, and layered textures can create uplifting spaces. Entries were required to incorporate three or more products from the Formica Portfolio of Surfacing Solutions, including FENIX Innovative Materials, for residential or commercial applications.
First prize was awarded to Kassandra Avila from Cégep de Trois-Rivières in Quebec, Canada, for her entry 'VIVO.' This versatile furniture piece is designed primarily for children, supporting various activities that encourage creativity, play, and self-expression while fostering independence. Its components can be arranged to suit different needs and user sizes, featuring rounded forms and a soft blue and white palette that creates a calming, luminous atmosphere.
Judges' Praise
Judge Ayse Birsel, an industrial designer, commented: 'VIVO stood out for its sophisticated and thoughtful use of Formica Laminate, both in its form and use of color. Each piece works beautifully on its own while also contributing to a cohesive system. The subtle progression in scale and color reflects careful consideration for children of different ages.'
Prizes and Recognition
All first-, second-, and third-place winners will receive cash prizes and invitations to attend NeoCon 2026 as guests of Formica Corporation. The company will fabricate and display the winning design at the event. This year, two entries tied for second place. Winning students will also participate as featured speakers in the official NeoCon program.
Industry Impact
Meghan Howell, North American Design and Creative Director of Formica Corporation, stated: 'This year's submissions reflect a thoughtful balance of function and emotion. It's inspiring to see how students used our products in unexpected ways to create uplifting, purposeful spaces that spark joy. The level of creativity students bring to this competition every year gives us real confidence in the future of design.'
