Former NHL enforcer Sean Avery is embroiled in another off-ice altercation, this time involving a neighbor he claims is 'crazy' and attempted to frame him with 'two hookers' after firing shots outside his Hollywood Hills mansion.
The 46-year-old former player, known for his time with the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings, took to Instagram to detail the incident that occurred on Tuesday. According to Avery, his neighbor shot at the tires of a contractor who was building a new deck at his home.
'My crazy neighbour shot out the tires of the contractor building a new deck at the house. As this is going on, there's a standoff at the house. He's inside. He's got guns,' Avery wrote on Instagram.
He further alleged that the neighbor attempted to frame him by sending two women to his residence while he was not present. 'He calls two hookers and tries to frame me. He sends two hookers up to the house for me — I'm not even there — as a smokescreen,' Avery added.
The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a 911 call from Avery's home around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, according to TMZ. Initially, officers found no disturbance, but they were called back around 5 p.m. for a shots-fired incident. The neighbor was arrested around 6:15 p.m.
Avery, who is attempting a career in acting, was reportedly on set during the alleged gunfire. His wife, model Hilary Rhoda, was also not home. It remains unclear whether their 5-year-old son, Nash, was present.
This is not the first time Avery has been involved in controversy. In 2022, TMZ obtained a video showing him arguing with young people about parking outside a residence he was house-sitting. He threatened to tear off their windshield wipers and challenged them to a fight.
Avery's provocative comments have also made headlines in the past. When former Toronto Maple Leaf Dion Phaneuf began dating his ex-girlfriend, actress Elisha Cuthbert, Avery remarked that Phaneuf was getting his 'sloppy seconds,' resulting in a suspension and fine.
Avery played 12 seasons in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Dallas Stars, and New York Rangers, recording 90 goals and 157 assists in 580 games. He led the league in penalty minutes twice before retiring in 2012.
