A single-engine aircraft crashed near the Smiths Falls-Montague Airport on Monday morning, leaving one person injured, according to Ontario Provincial Police.
Details of the Incident
Emergency services responded to the scene shortly after 9:44 AM EDT. The aircraft went down in a field adjacent to the airport, located approximately 70 kilometers southwest of Ottawa. The pilot, the sole occupant, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
OPP officers have secured the area, and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada has been notified. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash, though weather conditions at the time were reported as clear.
Community Response
Local residents expressed shock at the incident. "It's frightening to see a plane go down so close to homes," said one nearby resident. "We're relieved the pilot is expected to recover."
The Smiths Falls-Montague Airport is a small regional facility primarily used for general aviation and flight training. Operations at the airport have been temporarily suspended as the investigation continues.
This marks the second aviation incident in the region this year. In January, a similar crash near Ottawa resulted in minor injuries. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the OPP.
