Montreal's public transit authority is once again helping revellers ring in the new year safely by extending metro service into the early hours of January 1st. The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has confirmed it will run the metro two hours later than usual on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2025.
Extended Service for Key Metro Lines
This holiday extension, which mirrors the service offered last year, applies to the Green, Orange, and Yellow Lines. The final departures on these lines will be carefully coordinated to facilitate transfers for late-night travellers.
On a typical Saturday night, the last trains pass through the central Berri-UQAM station around 1:30 a.m. This year, the final trains on the Orange and Green Lines will be timed to pass through this major hub at 3 a.m.. To ensure smooth connections, the last eastbound and westbound trains will also wait for each other at Lionel-Groulx station at 2:52 a.m. and 3:09 a.m., respectively.
The Yellow Line will see its last departures in both directions at 3:07 a.m..
Notable Exception for the Blue Line
Commuters should note a significant exception to the extended hours. The Blue Line will maintain its regular nightly schedule. On New Year's Eve, the last trains will leave the line's terminuses at 12:45 a.m., arriving at the opposite end by 12:59 a.m.
The STM's night bus network will also operate according to its standard schedules. The agency has not announced any plans for free service on the holiday. Full details on station-specific closing times are available on the STM's dedicated New Year's webpage at www.stm.info/en/NewYears.
Regional Transit Plans for the Holiday
Other transit agencies in the Greater Montreal area have outlined their own operating plans for the holiday period:
- Réseau express métropolitain (REM): Will follow its usual schedule. Final departures are set for 12:51 a.m. from Brossard and 12:57 a.m. from Côte-de-Liesse. Service west of Côte-de-Liesse will end at 9 p.m.
- Société de transport de Laval (STL): Buses will run on a Saturday service schedule on December 31st. On New Year's Day, a reduced Sunday schedule will be in effect, with more than half of its bus lines offering no service before 11 a.m. or after 9 p.m.
- Réseau de transport de Longueuil (RTL): Will provide Saturday service on the 31st and Sunday service on January 1st.
- Exo: Trains will run on a regular schedule on December 31st, with no departures after midnight. Buses will operate on a reduced schedule. On January 1st, trains will follow a Sunday schedule and buses will run on a Saturday schedule.
Similar to the STM, none of these regional agencies have indicated they will offer complimentary service on New Year's Eve. The coordinated effort across transit networks aims to provide safe and reliable transportation options for residents celebrating the arrival of 2026.
