Weekend Traffic Alert: Mercier Bridge Reduced to Single Lane
Mercier Bridge down to one lane this weekend

Montreal drivers should prepare for significant traffic disruptions this weekend as multiple major infrastructure projects will reduce capacity on key routes throughout the metropolitan area. While this weekend represents a relatively light schedule compared to upcoming closures, several important thoroughfares will see reduced lanes or complete shutdowns.

Major Bridge Restrictions

The Mercier Bridge will operate with only one lane available in each direction from 11 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. on Monday. The upstream span heading toward Kahnawake will be completely closed during this period, forcing all traffic to share the downstream bridge. Additionally, access points from Airlie Street will be blocked throughout the weekend maintenance work.

Transport officials describe this weekend as a calm before the storm, with the Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge scheduled for closure next weekend, potentially creating even more substantial traffic challenges for west-island commuters and regional travelers.

Highway Closures and Detours

In Brossard, Highway 30 westbound will be completely shut down where it passes over Highway 10. This closure takes effect from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday. Motorists will need to follow posted detours that redirect traffic to service roads in the area.

Route 138 in Châteauguay will also experience restrictions, with two of three northbound lanes closed on St-Jean-Baptiste Boulevard between Rodrigue Street and Industriel Boulevard. This reduction runs concurrently with the other closures from Friday evening through Monday morning.

Ongoing Infrastructure Projects

Several long-term construction projects continue to affect Montreal's road network. On Highway 10, a westbound lane remains closed on the Bonaventure Expressway between the Victoria Bridge and Wellington Street until December. The Clément Bridge connecting Montreal with Nuns' Island continues to operate with contraflow traffic patterns, featuring one lane in each direction.

The Papineau-Leblanc Bridge (Highway 19) currently maintains two lanes in each direction, though partial or complete nightly closures may occur until the end of 2026. Meanwhile, the Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge operates with five total lanes—two in each direction plus one alternating lane that changes direction during rush hours.

Urban street work also continues to impact traffic flow. St-Antoine Street in Ville-Marie has been reduced to one lane between Berri Street and St-Hubert Street, with this configuration expected to remain until November 26. The St-Urbain Street overpass above the Ville-Marie Expressway remains closed for extensive renovations until late 2026, though pedestrian access continues.

Public transit offers a reliable alternative this weekend, with no planned disruptions to bus or metro service. The REM light rail system maintains its regular schedule, operating between Brossard and Deux-Montagnes until 9 p.m. and between Brossard and Côte-de-Liesse until 1 a.m.
