Transit users across Toronto should brace for substantial service interruptions this weekend as both the TTC and GO Transit implement major scheduled maintenance projects that will temporarily shut down key sections of their rail networks.
Extensive TTC Line 2 Shutdowns Planned
Starting Saturday, the Toronto Transit Commission will completely suspend subway service on Line 2 between Kipling and Jane stations to facilitate essential track maintenance operations. During this closure, shuttle buses will operate as replacement transportation for affected passengers.
The transit agency has advised that while Royal York Station will remain accessible, its Grenview Boulevard entrance will be temporarily closed throughout the maintenance period. All stations in the affected area will stay open to allow passengers to load PRESTO cards and transfer to connecting bus routes.
Additional Sunday Service Interruption
Following the Saturday closure, a separate section of Line 2 between Jane and Ossington stations will be shut down on Sunday for crucial signal system upgrades. Shuttle buses will again replace regular train service during this period.
During Sunday's closure, Runnymede, High Park, Lansdowne, and Dufferin stations will be completely inaccessible to passengers. Other stations along the affected route will remain open for PRESTO services and bus connections. The TTC anticipates normal service will resume by 6 a.m. Monday, just in time for the weekday morning commute.
GO Transit Kitchener Line Disruption
GO Transit riders will also experience significant service changes this weekend. There will be no train service on the Kitchener line between Bramalea GO Station and Union Station from Saturday through the end of service Sunday due to critical track work requirements.
Replacement buses will operate from Bramalea GO to Highway 407 Bus Terminal, where passengers can transfer to TTC Line 1 to complete their journey to Union Station. During this closure, GO trains will bypass Bloor, Mount Dennis, Weston, and Etobicoke North stations entirely, though regular GO bus service will continue to serve Malton GO Station.
Enhanced Service for Major Events
Despite the widespread closures, the TTC is implementing additional service measures to accommodate large crowds attending major weekend events in the city.
For baseball fans attending the Blue Jays home opener at Rogers Centre on Friday, the transit agency will deploy extra subway trains on Line 1 Yonge-University and increase service frequency on the 510 Spadina streetcar route.
Soccer enthusiasts heading to BMO Field on Saturday for Canada's international friendlies will benefit from enhanced service on the 509 Harbourfront route, with additional TTC staff stationed at Queens Quay and Exhibition loops to assist with crowd management.
Transit officials strongly recommend that all passengers plan their journeys carefully, allow extra travel time, and check for real-time service updates before departing this weekend.
